The story behind the photo: When we got married in June
of 1998, my grandpa gave us a very generous gift of $500. With a
large chunk of that money, the day before we started working that summer
we went to the Wal-Mart in Bozeman, Montana, and bought a Pentax 38-160mm
zoom lens camera on sale for about $300. This camera helped us take
all sorts of photographs a regular 35mm could not have done. On our
way back to Madison Campground, we went through the Norris Geyser Basin,
one of these special places in my life. We saw a minor eruption of
Steamboat and an eruption of Echinus Geyser, but it's often the features
you don't expect that bring the greatest joy. I remember that I was
struck by this feature, Green Dragon Spring because of the mixture of colors
and the sense of a small cave going into a dragon's lair. I seem
to remember Loree not being so touched by this spring, and I think I am
the one who took this photograph. The next day we began another summer
in Yellowstone.
