The story behind the photo: Either Loree or I may have taken this
photograph here at the bottom of the trail at Mammoth Hot Springs.
Like so many photos, this one is a liar as well. You would think
that this extict hot spring was off by itself in a lonely field surrounded
by a forest. In actuality, it is very close to many other thermal
wonders at Mammoth Hot Springs and quite close to Minerva Terrace.
It is an unusual feature to be sure, even somewhat perverse.
You can get a sense of scale from the small sign in front of the feature
which is only a couple feet from its base. We had trouble getting
a shot this good because the day was so beautiful that the sun shone extremely
brightly. When we found ourselves in that sort of situation, we found
that many of our most effective shots were taken right at the sun with
the feature that we wanted a shot of blocking the sun. For instance,
take a look at this beautiful picture of the
Arch in St. Louis taken with a cheap 35mm camera for a comparison of
this sort of technique.
