The story behind the photo: Loree had some relatives
visiting in August of 1998, and they loved to go swimming. Among
workers in the park, Moose Falls is said to be a warm place to swim; however,
I have never known anyone who actually swam in the falls who did not think
that the water was actually still pretty cold. Nevertheless, people
swim here anyhow. Behind the boulder where people at the falls often
sit on the right of this photograph, Loree and her sister Shelby are actually
freezing in the water in their swimsuits. You can actually see one
speck of human flesh if you look at the bottom left of the boulder.
As for me, I never went in the water, though I often watched co-workers
go into it--some even going behind the falls a little bit. I took
a fairly unique picture of this 32 foot waterfall in Southern Yellowstone
that few tourists know is right off the road and down a short though steep
trail (because the sign on the road merely says "Crawfish Creek").
This picture is taken from the middle of the creek on a log. Loree's
dad had crossed the log to get to a short hill on the other side of the
falls. I followed out to the center to take this shot. Most
shots are taken from the side near the boulder. I also took some
shots from the left of the falls, which I have never had a chance to scan.
No tourists being around, Moose Falls for a half hour or so became our
private waterfall.
