The story behind the photo: I have been to Old Faithful
many times, but before 1998, I never took the short hike from the back
of Old Faithful to a high overlook to see the eruption. On my website,
I had a link to a beautiful animated gif of an eruption from this vantage,
and so I was anxious to go there when I had the chance. One evening
after work, Loree and I went up there with a man from work named Kim Hunt
(who in the summer of 2000 won $1,000,000 on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
By the time Old Faithful erupted, it was almost completely dark.
But, on our way up, Loree took this shot of this dazzling blue wildflower,
which we later learned was called a penstemon. Some penstemons are
white, but this was the more common bloom. It was early July when
this was in bloom.
