The story behind the photo: Very early in the morning,
I began my hike to Fairy Falls. The hike to Fairy Falls begins with
a hike on the back end of another of Yellowstone's wonders, the Grand Prismatic
Spring. Nothing about this eery, gray steamy shot suggests the great
prism of the rainbow that exemplify this thermal pool, one of the largest
on the earth. The great aerial shots of this thermal feature are
generally not possible from the ground (though part of me wanted to hike
the nearby hill to get a better vantage, which I think would have been
possible). In any event, I was still entranced by this view of the
pool, which looked a little like the rolling waves gently coming in that
one finds in the fog of the Oregon or Washington coasts. In this
shot, on a day that was slightly overcast, we find an inseperable mass
of fog and steam from the thermal feature. And, for me, I could tell
that this was going to be the start of another unforgettable day in this
magic wonderland.
