12/12/09 Lack of snow may alter park opening (by Joyce Edlefsen Standard Journal--ID)
12/12/09 New book captures colorful history of Northern Pacific in shaping Yellowstone (by Gail Schontzler Bozeman Daily Chronicle)--contrary to what the article says, a case can be made that the Northern Pacific did in fact originate the idea of making Yellowstone a national park, but that depends on where one believes creation begins--with the first utterance of the idea, or the first utterance to people who could make it happen. As for whether the Northern Pacific was good or bad, I suspect I disagree with the authors.

12/11/09 Schweitzer to address livestock group (AP story in Billings Gazette)
12/12/09 Disease found in cattle herd (by Carol Ryan Dumas Capital Press--OR)--no way that bison infected these herds, and yet they keep spouting this nonsense; there are no bison anywhere near this area in Idaho. I used to show people where some tried to claim bison might have infected cattle in Montana; when they saw how far it was from anywhere any buffalo ever had gotten, they simply shook their heads in angry astonishment
12/10/09 Bark beetle funding (by CJ Baker Powell Tribune--WY)
12/10/09 Wyoming Game and Fish appraise mountain pine beetles (by Gib Mathers Powell Tribune--WY)
12/10/09 National Forest closes Horse Butte grazing (by Daniel Person Bozeman Daily Chronicle)--Horse Butte Peninsula hasn't had cows for 8 years; this just codifies it into policy and yet bison are still scheduled to be hazed off of Horse Butte by May 15

12/8/09 County wants a seat at bison panel meetings (by Matt Dettori Livingston Enterprise)--12th story; take a ticket, Park County--though Park County is reactionary in its attitude toward bison, it is true that the fate of the wild animal does not involve all the stakeholders ... they seemed especially steamed at the last meeting that native tribes at least had a nominal (though essentially powerless) seat at the table where they didn't--until then, you never heard a peep out of Park County.
12/8/09 Second brucellosis case found in Idaho cattle herd (by Carol Ryan Dumas Capital Press--OR)
12/8/09 Beetle epidemic strikes Yellowstone: Implications include impact on griz population, water supply (AP story in Casper Star-Tribune)--I personally think NRDC is overstating this in order to show why grizzlies are threatened; however, to call this the destruction of an ecosystem is overstated ... beetle infestations are part of the cycle; the problem isn't so much the beetles but the fact that we've organized ourselves in Greater Yellowstone as a society without taking them into account -- when we overpopulate ourselves (guilty as charged) and restrict wildlife movements, the local impacts in one area can have a larger effect than they would otherwise

12/6/09 Yellowstone a petri dish for climate change: The national park's virtually intact ecosystem, where the hand of man remains light, is a natural place for scientists to study the biological effects of global warming (by Julie Cart Los Angeles Times)--in the words "virtually intact" is a world of controversy in Yellowstone literature; Yellowstone is not an intact ecosystem, but how close to being "intact" is another issue altogether

12/4/09 Change at park endures: Educator outlines important events that helped mold Yellowstone into modern form (by Ruffin Prevost Billings Gazette)
12/4/09 Bison dispute subject of documentary (by Bozeman Daily Chronicle)--my only lament is that we weren't allowed to advertise this until very recently; I've known about this since the winter and even signed a release for a section where I was filmed (though if you see me, it will be for the flash of an instant--the documentary really focuses on what happened in the field this spring with the haze and is excellent)
12/4/09 Elk hunters vent at public meeting (by Daniel Person Bozeman Daily Chronicle)--and an interesting discussion that follows as people bend over backwards to provide their nativist credentials

12/2/09 Idaho cow tests positive for brucellosis (AP story in Casper Star-Tribune)--don't be surprised if this leads to another round of abuse of bison in Montana, even though there are no bison in Idaho; it's happened before when Judy Martz was governor of Montana

12/31/09 Cats and dogs? Skiers and snowmobilers? (by Brennan Sang West Yellowstone News)--how precious that he thinks that everyone can just get along ... sounds nice, but there's more going on here than skiers versus snowmobilers, and it's not just that one is more likely to drink white wine (another precious statement) ...

12/30/09 Turner ranch plan is the best way to save bison (by Casper Star-Tribune)--this newspaper, whose editorials posted here are commonly ones I disagree with, falls prey to the false dichotomy I commented on previously; besides the fact that these bison should never have been stripped from their family units and put into quarantine, nothing stops FWS from actually releasing these bison back into Yellowstone, and only politics stops them from releasing them into numerous public lands in Montana with suitable bison habitat ... these bison should not aid Turner's private herd; the governor's involvement--he who recently bragged about killing more bison than any governor in Montana history--only adds to the charge of collusion. End the quarantine program, and let these bison go free; the Gallatin Wildlife Association, as usual, is correct.

12/7/09 Human sparkler (by Robyn)--there's a reason Robyn gets a lot of emails; hers is perhaps the most important blog on the net for understanding life in Yellowstone ... and to think she almost gave up blogging until a faithful reader here - a former co-worker of mine in Grant Village - met her this summer and let her know she had a lot of fans

12/3/09 A response to "Looking Beyond Snowmobiles in Yellowstone": From a local perspective (by Clyde Seely in West Yellowstone News)--while I'm all for real local control (not the kind usually meant where all power is really ceded to corporations) and therefore local perspective, I find that the insistence of it to start an argument smacks not only of ad hominem but usually from deep-seated insecurity ... a local perspective is not a reason for an argument; it's more of a process point (that is, "I'm not right because I'm a local and can trump you with my generations of experience;" rather, "It is right that as a local, I focus on my locality, and perhaps, you should do the same.")
12/3/09 Two faces of the Forest Service (by Dan Hoskins in West Yellowstone News)
12/2/09 A gift to Yellowstone's bison from the Gallatin National Forest (by Matt Skoglund, Natural Resources Defense Council)--however, I have just heard a bison was killed in Montana's border hunt; also, the Gallatin National Forest can really do something by revoking the permit for a Department of Livestock bison trap on Horse Butte
