Brucellosis in Montana's cattle not only didn't destroy the livestock industry, it wasn't even as costly as the miniscule amount that losing its class free status temporarily was supposed to cost; however, those who really follow the issue have always understood that brucellosis was a smokescreen issue and that the livestock industry more than anything fears competition for grass with wildlife (especially bison) on public lands

This article suggests a rift; my own attendance at a meeting in Livingston suggested it ... by the way, some good comments under this article, as well

2/28/10 The Eternal and the changeable (by Leslie)
2/28/10 Winged hitchhikers (by Robyn)
2/28/10 Thanks to Turner for protecting our buffalo (by Maryellen Thompson in Billings Gazette)--the remarkable ignorance about what these "protected" buffalo at Turner's actually are required to endure under the quarantine plan is really tough to combat; I think there's a knee jerk reaction of some that because Turner is identified as a liberal, that some who are also liberal are inclined to support this and him without really understanding the situation
2/28/10 Questions about access in Tester's wilderness bill (by Robert Hurly in Billings Gazette)
2/27/10 A call for affordable access (by Brennan Sang West Yellowstone News)--this is an interesting shift in strategy by residents in West Yellowstone; I do think this hits on a very important issue that the snowmobile debate of the last decade largely missed as large environmental groups lacking economic class consciousness battled with snowmobilers and businesspeople, who otherwise could afford to go to Yellowstone in winter ... this isn't to say I necessarily support making access easy; I do support it being fair, which it currently is not
2/27/10 From the park superintendent (excerpted letter by Suzanne Lewis in West Yellowstone News)--she is right, of course ... that snowcoaches also have a significant environmental impact; but again, the economic exclusivity of access is not addressed ... because it rarely has been in the media until this new organizing in West Yellowstone

2/25/10 National park gun law still a yawner: Now that the national park gun law is in effect, I predict, once more, that park visitors won't really notice the difference, but the onus is now on gun owners to make sure I'm correct (by Bill Schneider New West)
2/25/10 Maybe I changed my mind ... (by JC 4&20 blackbirds)
2/24/10 Specimen Ridge (by Bette and Dave)

2/23/10 solo ski day (by s&w)
2/23/10 Watch out, buffalo! (by Frank J. IMAO)--although, it's not actually legal to shoot your loaded gun in Yellowstone, but you can carry it (though not into the Visitor's Center or Post Office)
2/23/10 Effort to demonize guns continues as parks open to law (by Alan Gottlieb and Dave Workman The Daily Caller)
2/22/10 Guns now allowed in national parks; why exactly? (by Michael Reilly Discovery)--in Yellowstone, your gun always was allowed; it just had to be disassembled ... now you can load it and not fire it, but the truth is that it has little practical effect ... certainly not as much as the ideologically-driven debate would have you believe

2/20/10 Time to offer ideas on park winter use plan (by Brett French Billings Gazette)--I'd suspect that people have a reasonable and healthy dose of cynicism toward a process where public comments are a legal obligation but where the public is almost always ignored

2/18/10 Canis update-icus (by Jesse DeVoe)
2/18/10 trip north: part 1 (by s&w)
2/18/10 NRA: Yellowstone a haven for drug trafficking (by Yellowstone Insider)--I will say that though I wasn't a party to it or a witness of it, back when I worked in Yellowstone, it was generally believed by people I worked with and others who had worked in Yellowstone that working in Yellowstone and drugs went hand in hand, but even if the worst case was true, rampant drug use and drug trafficking are two very different things ... having done this newspaper for many years, I don't recall seeing any reports in recent years of violent crimes in Yellowstone
2/18/10 Shoot-on-sight wolves? (by Andrew McKean Outdoor Life)
2/18/10 Tester's bill causing major rift among wilderness advocates: Former Montana Wilderness Association Council members bolt: You'd think that one of the major supporters of the long overdue effort to end Montana's wilderness drought would remain united it its support for the bill; wrong (by Bill Schneider New West)
2/16/10 Yellowstone wolf numbers down to lowest levels since 1999; NPS calls dive "natural" (by Yellowstone Insider)--malnutrition seems to me a key factor; as elk populations actually reach the carrying capacity of the range, it only seems right that wolf populations would soon follow ... evidence keeps pointing toward elk populations reaching more sustainable levels; I suspect we'll see wolf populations do the same, though there's other pressures on wolves as well ... as we read about constantly in the news
2/16/10 Cows or condos: A false choice between public lands ranching and sprawl (by George Wuerthner New West)--a point that I've privately argued as well

2/14/10 23/7 (by Robyn)--I also felt that great relief a few years back when hiking/biking in Yellowstone and Grand Teton while living in DC I realized that it was inevitable that I would move to the area; when that feeling hit me, I no longer felt the pressure to do and see it all ... I could live it and enjoy it as it came.
2/14/10 Slough Creek (by Dave)--I should consider skiing out there some day; I love Slough Creek; picture on the blog of wolves howling in the area
2/14/10 Forest, recreation bill will work for Montana (by Brock Anderson in Billings Gazette)
2/13/10 Tester logging bill proposes a calamitous precedent (by Stewart M. Brandborg in Billings Gazette)
2/13/10 when 100% isn't enough ... (by s&w)--there really is no such thing as 100% weather forecast in Yellowstone; I learned a long time ago never to count on the weather and never to let weather stop you from your plans because it's likely to be different every couple miles in the park ... just this weekend, it was warm and dry in Gardiner and Mammoth; we drove 18 miles to Tower Junction where it was significantly cooler with fresh snow.
2/13/10 Progress on protecting Wyoming's "Path of the Pronghorn" underscores broader issues (by Jim Burnett National Parks Traveler)
2/12/10 Winter use in Yellowstone sets an example (by Alfred Runte in The Salt Lake Tribune)--there are several respects with which I disagree with Runte but perhaps not the same ones that the snowmobile enthusiasts would; among several things, I get antsy when "history" is personified into a historical figure who makes "picks."

2/11/10 Yellowstone bison win a temporary home (PRO) (by Jeff Welsch, Greater Yellowstone Coalition, in High Country News)--one of many reasons I rarely have a good thing to say about the Greater Yellowstone Coalition; if I had more time, I would write an essay responding to Mr. Welsch

2/11/10 We're number one! (by Yellowstone Insider)--congrats; my site doesn't track statistics in a meaningful way and isn't on any social networking site ... it averages somewhat less than 100 unique visitors a day; I suspect, however, that Yellowstone Net probably continues to set the benchmark for most visitors (updates earlier language - was in a rush, which could have been and was interpreted as suggesting that I was talking about the visitation stats on Yellowstone Insider - I wasn't - ... my apologies for the confusion) ...
2/11/10 As your senator, here's how I'd end the war over wilderness: If our elected representatives and senators really want to resolve the contentious wilderness controversy and serve the needs of all three major stakeholders in this debate, here's how they could do it; no, it's not for faint-hearted politicians (by "Senator" Bill Schneider New West)

2/8/10 Dear Yellowstone (by Wesley Mathis)--interesting, would like to see more details about this; apparently, a permit for use by Camp Loll (a Boy Scout camp) has had some limits put on it that the writer here objects to, but it's not clear what the circumstances or the limits are ...
2/8/10 Letter for Yellowstone (by Delose Conner, Camp Loll)--here's another by the director of Camp Loll; however, again, the details are scant; it's hard to understand why letters have been published publicly without more details for the public at large unaware of the controversy or the history of the partnership; UPDATE 2/9: Check out the comments beneath the post; I asked a lot of questions, and received a lot of answers - apparently, the number of scouts on the permit has been drastically reduced

2/4/10 Yellowstone elk (by Ian Plant Mountain Trail Photo Blog)--since this guy was apparently gone, he wasn't one of the endless gauntlet of wildlife photographers I saw in the Lamar Valley; I used to live in DC; I rarely saw as many press as I saw photographers lined up ... the whole thing made me sad; well, heck, at least there was NO ONE on the trail skiing except us
