7/31/09-8/2/09 We're leaving this Friday morning for a weekend camping and hiking in the Tetons. Then, I have a ton of work, and so the next update is likely to be Monday. That will leave a couple days where the newspaper wrongly says "July" instead of August. Also, an interesting note, if we were to predict Yellowstone visitation for July based on the size of the newspaper file, it's looking like visitation to Yellowstone will either break even or show an uptick. It will be interesting to see; there are some variables that make me unsure, though.

7/11/09 Foes of elk feed sites lose court decision (AP story in Billings Gazette)--if chronic wasting disease hits Wyoming feedlots (and a moose in the Star Valley last October was found dead with CWD), the problem will make the brucellosis situation seem more laughable than it already is ... because then we will have a real tragedy
7/10/09 Yellowstone’s ranger-guided hikes offer much more than just scenery (by Camden Easterling Livingston Enterprise)--6th story
7/10/09 Road construction slows traffic at Yellowstone's east gate (by Leslie Stratmoen KTAK--WY)--don't forget road construction in the Tetons near the South Entrance, as well as the Norris to Madison Road construction ... a section of that road will close August 17, effectively splitting travel in the park in two (or one long roundabout way)
7/10/09 Yellowstone Committee funds weed prevention on gravel pits (by West Yellowstone News)
7/10/09 Fishing report (by Bucky McCormick, Blue Ribbon Flies, in West Yellowstone News)
7/10/09 ND brucellosis order still stands (AP story in Billings Gazette)--but restrictions eased in Iowa
7/9/09 Montana declared free of livestock disease (AP story in Billings Gazette)--wow, brucellosis from some other source didn't destroy Montana's livestock industry ... and wild buffalo in Montana won't either, but everyone should know that brucellosis is not really the issue when it comes to why buffalo in Montana keep getting slaughtered
7/9/09 MT again brucellosis free (by David Jay KTVQ--MT)--so, in 10 months of losing the status, the cost was also far less then than estimated; even in the worst case scenario, the cost of preventing buffalo from transmitting brucellosis costs more than it costs the state for losing class free status; when you figure that buffalo weren't even the cause here, the cost is that much more absurd, when you see how little it actually does to the state industry when that happens you see further, and when you recognize what a small percentage of Montana's GDP is from cattle, it's even more absurd ... and those aren't even close to the best arguments against the policy
7/9/09 One million travel through YNP gates (by Yancy Bonner Powell Tribune--WY)--but again cautions that people aren't spending money; lodging reservations are actually down ... yet visitation is at record numbers
7/9/09 Lodging reservations drop below 75 percent (by Katy Niner Jackson Hole News and Guide)--reversing early summer trends

7/20/09 07,17.09 Yellowstone's photogenic (by Jeff)--interesting observations, even if I wouldn't use the word choice to describe the 1988 fires ... check out the observations on bison and the pine bark; the most common wildlife to do that is elk, and many of those trees have been destroyed over time ... one of the reasons why many over the years argued that elk numbers were far too high for the biodiversity of the park

7/20/09 I guess you see what you want to see (by Tom Remington)--with audio; I almost mentioned the strange differences of headlines of basically the same article; it seems that wolves indeed are causing there to be lower elk numbers ... what I have suggested here is that's probably a good thing for the Northern Range
7/20/09 Washington cries wolf, again (by Eric Hess The Daily Score)--I don't think science is the actual determinant of the debate; very interesting how the same set of facts expose the values of the people interpreting them; science sets the stage for this kind of discussion, but it doesn't settle it
