9/28/09 Fire escape (by Cindie)--reactions like this suggest a lot of what makes me uneasy about Burns's work; it's not that he doesn't touch on so many of the crimes going on against the land or the reasons for setting these aside and some of the realpolitik; it's that it's done anecdotally to the point that you lose how these anecdotes fit into the larger story; why was it that Yosemite and Yellowstone had to be shown to be utterly useless; why was it that the Northern Pacific already had such power as to suggest Yellowstone and have Langford on their payroll? And, I'd suggest something else, there was no movement to set aside unspoiled wilderness in the creation of national parks; Muir's story intertwined with the real one confuses the issue to the point that people understandably react the way this blogger has and therefore draw the wrong message and the wrong story.
