Scarcely is a historian as an important a part
of the history of his subject as Hiram Martin Chittenden was
to Yellowstone. Chittenden not only wrote the classical
work on the history of the park, but also as a captain in the Army Corps of Engineers, was most responsible for the present road system today. He also built the Roosevelt Memorial Arch at the North Entrance of the Park, and many things in the park now bear his name. He wrote to speak to the acts of others, now no history of Yellowstone is complete without mention of his acts.
